Fishtail: tales of sounds and words

A series of four specials exploring the relationship between sounds and words and other forms of art. Each week, we will be discussing the connections between different pieces of work with a series of special guests. We'll be featuring great and innovative music, writing and art written by our favourite established artists and york students.

The idea of fishtail comes from Ouroboros, which is the image of a fish or reptile biting its own tail. It signifies something that is constantly recreating itself, something that pre-existed and is so powerful that it must continue. Of course, it also comes from the notion of a fisherman's tale. In our programme, we're going to be 'biting our tales' and circulating from one art form to the next.

The Night Call

A show dedicated to all things synthwave, the breakout electronic genre featuring old-school synths inspired by the pop hits and movie soundtracks of the 1980's. James and Bernie will drive you through the night across the genre's expansive indie scene, with the occasional genuine retro hit for good measure. If you're a fan of contemporary styles and still wish we used cassettes, then this is the show for you!

The Chaos Theatre

No structure. No consistency. I could sit there for 40 minutes and talk about chainlink - or maybe it's a music show

In The Room with Joni Roome

The best in new music, old tunes you've mentally blocked out and wrestling theme tunes.

Joined as ever by Sir Tim Westwood and a questionable soundboard.

Always big.

URY Music: about:blank

The blue light of a phone in the dark
A shaggy dog story
Coming in from the cold for a second
A debate between dreams
Drinking a bottle of god knows what
A long and gleaming ribbon
with a ticket sewn on
Or a small ugly fly
with big pretty eyes

URY Breakfast: Anthony's Miscellanea

A breakfast show which is perhaps a bit more unusual - expect long stretches of classical music, or long instrumental pieces from the prog rock era. Perfect for starting the day to? Perhaps.

Changing Perspectives

Verbosa Lacrimosa

In this pretentious and overly verbose classical music show, your host will meander, adagio style, upon a diverse variety (dead white men) of the infamous classical canon. I will linger (fermata style) on the facts and figures that will either send you into an instrumentally-induced sleep or fire up the musicologist buried within you, tingling your prefrontal cortex with scrupulous harmonic, structural and contextual analysis. In this highly sophisticated show, my knowledge and insight as an undergrad music student will be put to the test, as will my ability to engage listeners who are more atuned to the likes of Radiohead and Paramore with the likes of Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev. Can I bring you rondo to your senses?

Alumni Shows: Lockdowns To Be Cheerful - Part 3

A programme of music and words, designed to be transmitted over the radio.
Last term, I presented "33 Years In 2 Hours", a show so tightly crammed I barely got to say a word. This time... I can't be more specific, who knows what the world will look like by next week? Maybe I'll just play some of the experimental music I've enjoyed in recent years. And that Ian Dury song.

Let's Get Minimal
An hour of mainly minimal/deep house techno mixed with interesting music of other genres.
Washing machine

We do what we like.

That Late Late Underground Sound.

Can't sleep? Feel the need to listen to some really odd music in the early hours of the morning? This is the show for you. Join me as I play an eclectic mix of underground music, ranging from brass house , to expermental hip-hop, to math rock and North African electronic jazz funk stuff. It will be eye opening. If you need someone to talk to and you don't want to ask one of your flatmates how to use a tin opener, I've got that covered too. Jim.  x

Byörk FM

Hosted by me, Freddie, this radio show will mix together a blend of music genres, from Azealia Banks to Zedd, from experimental pop to rap, I'm hoping to keep you, the audience, entertained and exposed to all sorts of new music! Recommendations are always welcome, as I am always looking to become as esoteric, niche and painfully performative as humanely possible ;)

URY Music: Strange

The music played on this show is usually experimental in at least one dimension (but is not confined to this fairly uninformative tag), and as much as possible travels to you from a record or from a tape.
