URY News Special - Student Media: York Hitting the Headlines
Join the national award winning URY News team for a special edition of the Newshour with George Lane.
This programme covers student media on campus - With all the recent scandalus headlines and questionable reporting techiniques, is student media a useful and necessary outlet? Or are student journalists just in it for enhancing future career prospects.
We speak with the student media, York Universty Students Union, external 'student' news sources, and industry experts including BBCs Chris Smith.

Weekly show in which we dissect and discuss the very best cinema and a smattering of recent releases. With regular features on the history of cinema, special guests and a good selection of the very best film music.
Join Reece, Sophy and Zak for 2 hours of the best music, a few games, and a lot of chat. We're back this year with a new addition to the team and some amazing new features including quizzes, challenges and news/review segments. Our music once again will be based on any listener requests, although in the mean time we'll be playing a whole host of pop, hip-hop and R&B bangers; old and new.
A magazine show in whic we take a closer look at the world of popular culture and the arts. Each week we will take a look at the latest from the world of music, film, television, gaming and the wider arts - as well as playing a wide range of music, old and new.
As the saying goes, everyone gets theirs. University bigwigs, students, and campus in general have finally had enough of Jonny Long and Callum McCulloch.
In the ultimate act of media censorship, the powers that be have created an artificial island in the lake by central hall, and have duly marrooned our two entrepid protagonists upon it.
However, in an age of plummetting league table places, a disaffected student body, and general lack of extraordinarily funny people, the boys have been given a radio show to pass their time in exile, and also the option of recruiting one more person for their wiley band of vagabonds.
Therefore, they will be holding tryouts, live on air. There will be challenges, we will critique the songs you wish to bring with you, your luxury item better be on our list of things we need.
It's going to be sort of like The Apprentice, Only Connect, The X Factor, Raven, and a certain BBC Radio 4 radio show (that we can't remember the name of) all rolled into one.
The critics have called it a gamechanger, our mother's have called it a 2:2 waiting to happen.
All we know is that it's going to pop off in a big way.

After a resoundingly unsuccessful round of interviews last term, the search continues. Expect such radio classics as Stevie Wonder's 5-a-day, Identity Theft, the unforgettable Mum-DMC and plenty more.

Rumour has it this is the best show URY has ever seen, and we would know, we started those rumours.
The URY Speech team invetsigates the role of gender identity in our society. Our aim is to raise awareness of the different types of identity, and to address related topics such as the representation of gender in the media, politics, and law, as well as looking at the history of gender and personal perspectives from students. Georgie Norgate interviews a variety of people to learn about their personal experience with gender and some issues they have come across as a result of their gender identity.
After we made the Gender Documentary, we had a panel to discuss some of the questions raised. Our aim is to raise awareness of the different types of identity, and to address related topics such as the representation of gender in the media, politics, and law, as well as looking at the history of gender and personal perspectives from students.
The Big Sofa graced the York Uni airwaves all the way back in 2001, when Rach was a psychology undergrad living in a breezeblock prison called Goodricke C Block.
Since then Rach has graduated (hurray! They said it would never happen!), moved away (now living in Mordor (Morden), London), worked three different jobs (evil corporate advertising; bonkers Virgin Radio; the BBC), birthed three kids (two boys, one girl), become a stand up comedian (three years in, still haven't done Live at the Apollo) and QUIT RADIO (sob.)
This last one makes her incredibly sad.
So Rach is ecstatic to be back behind a microphone. Join her for this one off two hour show and listen to the joy plastered all over her face.
Quietly forgetting the undertaking given on his last URY show on 24 June 1985, Jeremy Rogers returns URY to the time when there were only 4,500 undergraduate students, beer was 50p a pint, social media meant sending postcards and URY itself was a few tens of metres from where it is now, both in the studio and on the dial.
Does your dad love reading Amazon reviews? Forum posts about different Black and Decker drills? Well he might love this show! As we delve into the most banal corners of the internet to try and find some hidden meaning to everything. Failing this, we'll at least know the best way to make pancakes. Weekly guests based on no logic at all, no format week to week beyond a theme we will decide in the moment. This will be the best worst thing you've ever listened to.

Exactly one week before an historic and unpredictable election, URY News is joined by representatives of the Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrat parties to discuss the key talking points of our election and fight for your votes, with analysis and context from other student media groups.
