URY News Special: Is It High Time? The Debate Over Legalising Drugs

In this special hour-long programme from the URY News Team, we examine the debates surrounding the legalisation of drugs. We'll be hearing all sides of the argument, including the view from the NHS, a criminal lawyer and former York student turned journalist and author Peter Hitchens, as well as lots of student opinions on the matter.

URY:PM - The "What is the character limit for these show names anyhow? Is there one? Perhaps there should be one? I mean, this one is really stretching out the schedule table. And still it continues. Surely nobody will ever need a show name to be this long?" Show, the Absolute Last No-More-After-This Complete and Utter Final Show of All Time (Perhaps?!?!) of Eiron Page (with Naomi Gildert, Who - We Hope - Has Many More Shows to Come)

We break the schedule layout to bring you one last show from former programme controller Eiron Page, and pass the baton by way of radio to the new programme controller - Naomi - and also play some music, ostensibly chosen by you. The PM show Eiron always meant to do, but never did; because leaving things to the last minute is how he do.

Tweedle Dum, De and Me

Show comprising 3 final year undergraduates taking a look at that inevitable question of 'what next?'... through the medium of entertainment. Alongside a special guest each week (we'll sort these- people with varying weird and wonderful things lined up for them after uni), we'll look to sift through one more potential life choice every week as we count down towards the end of university. The planned format of the show will look to include an interview with our special guest as they join us for a whole host of potential silly features including:

- Helen and Judy's travelling tips. Being seasoned travellers of Asia, the pair will reveal another wacky story from their travelling experiences each week.
- 'Fit it in my Fro' - special guest will look to fit a different object each week into Joe's afro. Feature will also include leaderboard based on nature of object chosen and how many they managed to fit in his hair.
- 'Joe's chimes' or a title to that effect. Comic song, recorded specially for the show every week, written by Joe on a subject messaged in to the show/something to do with the idea of 'what's next?'
- Interview with our special guest on what his/her plan is for next year and/or what they are currently doing having now graduated. Many exciting people lined up!
- 'Decipher Judy/Helen' or title to that effect- feature involving Joe/listeners attempting to guess certain scottish accented words in English or Gaelic.

Show's music will probably be around 6 songs and will be a competition between Joe, Helen and Judy (2 songs each) on who has picked the best music for that day. Potentially based around the 'what next' theme for that show!

In a nutshell, light-hearted entertainment show looking at the serious question of 'what's next?'. Aimed then at current final years but also applicable for all years. Will also look to have jingle for the show- playing on idea of 'tweedle Dum' (Helen/Judy), tweedle De (Helen/Judy) and Me (Joe).

URY Election Special 2015

URY covers the 2015 General Election results as they are announced with robust severity and Yorkist irreverence. Presented by Jack Staples-Butler of URY News.

*** The only show on URY to double as a bug report!™

URY:PM - Light Refreshment

Homers Oddities

A selection of classic and/or obscure punk, post-punk, new wave and indie-rock, spanning many decades.

Fishtail: tales of sounds and words

A series of four specials exploring the relationship between sounds and words and other forms of art. Each week, we will be discussing the connections between different pieces of work with a series of special guests. We'll be featuring great and innovative music, writing and art written by our favourite established artists and york students.

The idea of fishtail comes from Ouroboros, which is the image of a fish or reptile biting its own tail. It signifies something that is constantly recreating itself, something that pre-existed and is so powerful that it must continue. Of course, it also comes from the notion of a fisherman's tale. In our programme, we're going to be 'biting our tales' and circulating from one art form to the next.

Alumni Takeover: The Scott Bryan Show

From 2007-2010, The Scott Bryan Show was broadcast on University Radio York. It was a show that I reckon I will remember for the rest of my damn life.

For one afternoon, it's back. Featuring Predic-A-Manger, The York Pork Fork Talk Walk Spork Game and a lot of music that nobody has played on the station for about five years, Dave Tracz will be doing the news. I'll get a text from my mother telling me to slow down, it'll be fine whatever I am saying.

Please listen. It'll be fine.

Alumni Takeover: The Big Sofa

The Big Sofa graced the York Uni airwaves all the way back in 2001, when Rach was a psychology undergrad living in a breezeblock prison called Goodricke C Block.

Since then Rach has graduated (hurray! They said it would never happen!), moved away (now living in Mordor (Morden), London), worked three different jobs (evil corporate advertising; bonkers Virgin Radio; the BBC), birthed three kids (two boys, one girl), become a stand up comedian (three years in, still haven't done Live at the Apollo) and QUIT RADIO (sob.)

This last one makes her incredibly sad.

So Rach is ecstatic to be back behind a microphone. Join her for this one off two hour show and listen to the joy plastered all over her face.

In order too justify the vast expense of time, effort, and finances I have invested on my long range wifi antenna. Depending on how well I set up my kit, there may even be music and live interviews over skype/my mobile. Feel free too enable my eccentricities by listening.

Probably not

Matt Windsor's PhD Procrastination

Matt Windsor should really be writing up his thesis.  Instead, he's doing yet another URY radio show, focusing on music older than him sandwiched between awkward observations about life as a washed-up postgraduate.  Oh dear.

BOMBTRACKS

Ughh!
Hey yo, it's just another bombtrack...ughh!
Hey yo, it's just another bombtrack...yeah!
It goes a-1, 2, 3...

Hey yo, it's just another bombtrack
And suckas be thinkin' that they can fade this
But I'm gonna drop it at a higher level
'Cause I'm inclined to stoop down
Hand out some beat-downs
Cold runna train on punk ho's that
Think they run the game

But I learned to burn that bridge and delete
Those who compete...at a level that's obsolete
Instead I warm my hands upon the flames of the flag
As I recall our downfall
And the business that burned us all
See through the news and the views that twist reality

Enough
I call the bluff
Fudge Manifest destiny

Landlords and power Doors
On my people they took turns
Dispute the suits I ignite
And then watch 'em burn

With the thoughts from a militant mind
Hardline, hardline after hardline

Landlords and power boars
On my people they took turns
Dispute the suits I ignite
And then watch 'em burn

Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn
Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn
Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn
Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn

Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn
Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn
Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn
Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn

It goes a-1, 2, 3
Another funky radical bombtrack
Started as a sketch in my notebook
And now dope hooks make punks take another look
My thoughts ya hear and ya begin to fear
That ya card will get pulled if ya interfere

With the thoughts from a militant militant mind
Hardline, hardline after hardline

Landlords and power oars
On my people they took turns
Dispute the suits I ignite
And then watch 'em burn

Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn
Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn
Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn
Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn
Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn
Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn
Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn
Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn
Burn

Ughh
Hey yo, it's just another bombtrack
Yeah
Ughh

Check it out

The Narrow Boat That Rocked

Grace and Jollan have always dreamt of opening a coffee shop on a narrow boat but until they finish their degrees and have £70,000 to buy a narrow boat, a radio show will have to do.

Join us each week for awful puns from Jollan, awful music choices from Grace, and probably some vague attempt at radio.

Radio Jaden

“Radio Jaden powers on, unlocks, and ensures a stormy shock of gooey alternative woke.” - Alasondro Alegre

Join Jollan and Joel in their alternate nite-club Radio Jaden, a weekly shot of new cuts, occasional attempts at semi-serious musical discussion, and takes so hot you’ll need Derwent hands to hold them. In short - guests, groove, and contractually obligated visual wackiness for webcam viewers.

Stevo tries not to break URY.

After over a year off the airwaves, Stephen Stevo Clarke is returning for an hour, where he'll do his best not to break everything and take the station of air! There'll be some other people there too probably.

URY Breakfast: It's Starting To Dawn On Me

It's starting to dawn on me... what a terrible idea doing a bumper 2 hour breakfast show is. If you do happen to be awake, you probably have something better to be doing anyway, but on the off chance you don't, why not listen to this?

Matt Windsor's Almost Definitely Last Ever Show, Probably

Exactly what it says on the tin.

Not that radio shows come in tins.

But this one does, and it's a three decade old salted pork tin full of what will probably be recent London migrant and soon-to-be-former PhD student Matt Windsor's last ever show on URY before he finally stops being a student.  Expect pretty much everything that can be expected from a washed up student radio DJ that was once referred to as URY's answer to Alan Partridge: an hour of awkward gaps between songs, awkward songs between gaps, and attempts to draw a close on 8ish years of somehow repeatedly being scheduled for shows despite having the radio nous of a loofah.  Does anyone still use loofahs?

Join the University of York Concert Orchestra for an evening of Christmas and classical pieces.

Live from the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall at the University of York.

The Waldorf and Statler: 50 Years

The old guys are back, but will you still love us now we are 64?  For
tonight's show Kim and Richard are departing from their usual '50 years'
format for a looser themed selection.  There's still likely to be  plenty of
music that featured in their 1976 shows (yes, they really are that old), but
at least Richard will try to show they haven't completely lost touch with
current music. No origami this time.

Dougsoc Presents: 42

Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the Western Spiral arm of the Milky Way galaxy, lies a small, unregarded yellow sun. Orbiting this at a distance of roughly ninety-million miles is an utterly insignificant blue-green planet whose inhabitants include a student radio station, and a Douglas Adams Society in the same place.

On the 42nd anniversary of the orginal broadcast of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Dougsoc and URY collide in an infinitely improbable fusion of geekery and humour.

The Spelling Bee Show

Join us as we try to spell randomly generated words using songs we know. Will the music at all fit together? Probably not! But join us anyways!

The Randewich Hour

Can I, a man with a lack of music knowledge, fill an hour of radio? Join me as I play whatever songs I can remember exist, including (probably) some of the worst music URY has to offer.

The Talk

The Talk. You know what that is. It is the talk with that special someone on- what are we?

It is feared, dreaded and heavily anticpated. What do York students think of 21st century relationships?

In this show we will talk about what is a relationship? How is that different to 'seeing' someone, or dating? How best should we make up and break up? How do people keep up relatonships? From one night stands with your flatmate, to long distance relationships across the globe. We've got you covered for all sorts of issues so please tune in as ping us a message if you can!

A fortnightly show with York students for York students.

The Culture Show

A show covering all things arts, and history, in and around the city of York. Featuring a special guest (or two). Come listen to us discover things you want to know, and many things you probably didn't want to know bi-weekly!

URY Breakfast: Rob & Steve
We're the sauce on your early morning sausage.
An All Time Lowe

It's late, I'm probably knackered from work, and now it's time to do a music. However, due to popular demand by people who are never going to listen, this music must be.... modern.... .... The horror is real. Join me for another hour of fake enthusiasm, rants about things I find on twitter and occasional thoughts about whether I should order in Pizza.
It's mostly for my sake.

Absolute Banger

A Nervous Breakdown

Loud, fast, brutal music from some of the best punk, rock, alternative and Hip-hop bands around the globe.
Turn it up to 11 and hopefully everyone else can enjoy the show, from 3 blocks away.
