Mike Wallbank's Rockabilly Riot!

A show to turn even the lamest of squares into far-out foot tappers.

Over the course of the show, extreme levels of rockabilly will be pumped through the airwaves of URY, from Elvis Presley to The Big Bopper, all with the intention of providing maximum satisfaction.

The show will consist of anecdotes relating to the music in question, explorations into the popular themes and concepts of rockabilly/rock 'n' roll (such as a show dedicated to 'Death Discs'), as well as interviews with individuals who remember watching the rock 'n' roll stars of the 1950s in their heyday. Playing the big hits of the 1950s, as well as with the secret 7" golddust that's been hiding in the attic, this show will provide a roster of early rock 'n' roll and rockabilly that will make you want to turn your fringe into a quiff, your Volkswagen into a Cadillac, and your Carling into a Cherry Coke.

Fishtail: tales of sounds and words

A series of four specials exploring the relationship between sounds and words and other forms of art. Each week, we will be discussing the connections between different pieces of work with a series of special guests. We'll be featuring great and innovative music, writing and art written by our favourite established artists and york students.

The idea of fishtail comes from Ouroboros, which is the image of a fish or reptile biting its own tail. It signifies something that is constantly recreating itself, something that pre-existed and is so powerful that it must continue. Of course, it also comes from the notion of a fisherman's tale. In our programme, we're going to be 'biting our tales' and circulating from one art form to the next.

A Couple of Everyday Feminists

This show will predominantly focus on feminism/equal rights and deal with a different women's issue/equal rights issue every week. For example, one week we may discuss the crazy cat lady phenomenon and another might discuss the "feminism is extreme" assumption. We are hoping to incorporate issues that women face around the world also. All kinds of genres of music will be played, not necessarily relating to the topic for the week but just music that we want to share with listeners.

Experimental Jet Set

A seamless hour of experimental music curated and presented by Freddie Rose. With minimal talking and a focus on avant-garde and underground music, Experimental Jet Set harkens back to the college radio stations in the United States and UK in the 20th century, whose dedication to music below the mainstream championed and gave a voice to generations of experimental, alternative musicians and art-rockers - including Sonic Youth, whose 1994 album the show's name is derived from.
"College stations saw promulgation of lesser-heard groups as their responsibility; their sacred mission. They were staffed by music enthusiasts who worked without pay, and who saw college rock as a desperately needed alternative to the platinum tedium of “classic” and Top 40 drivel." - Ian Svenonius
