GREGOR SAMSA, a travelling cloth salesman, lives a life of routine. Every day he wakes up, takes the train, goes to work to earn enough money to support his family and returns home. However one day, without explanation, Gregor wakes up to find that he has transformed into a gigantic insect. Steven Berkoff's adaptation of Kafka's most famous story places the family's struggle in coming to terms with Gregor's transformation at the heart of the narrative. Gregor sits isolated in his bedroom at the top of the family home away from the sneers and glares of ignorant humans. Inspired by the theatres of Lecoq, Decroux, Barrault, Laban and Artaud, this revival of Berkoff's Metamorphosis focusses on the dichotomies between freedom and entrapment, loyalty and abandonment, what makes the monster and what makes the man.
