Six degrees of...
Based on the idea that everyone is at most six steps away from any other person on Earth, the aim of this show is to apply this to music, bringing you varying genres of music where each song has some connection to the song before e.g. featured a member of, toured with, married a member of, on the same record label as, wrote a song about etc.

The aim of the show is to provide a variation of different music spanning different genres but still finding a link from one song to the next i.e. this band toured with, has a member who featured in one of the songs of, has the same record label as, appeared in the same soundtrack for a film as, has a member who is married to a member of....etc.

'The New World Order' by Ben Jeapes. Part 1: 1645
URY's national award winning team presents our most ambitious drama to date, available to hear worldwide at www.ury.org.uk, with two feature length Episodes over two consecutive weeks! ‘England, May 1645: The civil war that has torn England apart between King Charles I and Parliament is nearing its bloody conclusion — and in the English countryside, a stranger seeks his old love and finds there is a son whom he has never seen...’ You would be excused, perhaps, for thinking that this is the introduction to a thrilling historical drama. And you'd be dead right. Yet this is not the history you know, for the world has turned on to a new and deadly path. With breath-taking imagination, Ben Jeapes has wrenched the familiar flow of English history out of its course and made it into something else, something entirely other. There is a third force, an entirely alien force — the Holekhor — who have martial powers of their own, their own religious leaders who command mysterious and strange forces, and who bring with them technology that should not have been seen in England for another three hundred years... Prepare to be astounded. History will never be the same again.’ Described by the Sunday Times in 2004 as "Without doubt the best science fiction book of the year”, the national award winning drama team at University Radio York has the privilege of the first ever dramatization of this incredible novel. With an incredible cast of around 30 talented student actors and a specially composed score recorded by an ensemble fine student musicians this two part feature length drama brings you, through the power of radio, scenes to rival Hollywood epics as well as an intimate portrait of historical figures and beautifully crafted characters in a world turned on its head. Indie-Go Breakfast Special

Has Fresher's week made you tired? Hungover? Vomiting into your bedsheets, wondering why, oh god why, you got yourself in this dour predicament? If you answered no to any or all of these questions, you might actually be awake enough to listen to the Indie-Go Breakfast Special at 10AM this Thursday. We'll be serving up a full English of rock and indie sausage, with a squirt of Entertainment Ketchup, topped off with... er... fried egg something. I dunno, don't do metaphors.

Big Cheese on Campus

The music equivalent of a shot at Willow, this show revels in the music which is so bad that it's kind of good. Rather than gently getting you through Monday, I instead will attempt to get you singing along to songs you hoped you'd forgotten the words to. Perfect for not doing work to, Monday evenings will never be the same again. DISCLAIMER: Monday nights will probably be the same as every other Monday as the presenter has no control over the days or weather or any cool powers like that (even though he thinks he does). The Presenter takes no liability for any injuries caused by people suddenly dancing to any of the tunes played or the insult that this show is to good music. Terms, conditions and yolo applies.

URY News Special: Is It High Time? The Debate Over Legalising Drugs

In this special hour-long programme from the URY News Team, we examine the debates surrounding the legalisation of drugs. Is prosecuting drug-users the way to stop the UK's problem with drug addiction? Should harmful substances be legalised, or decriminalised? Or would this cause more problems than it solves? We'll be hearing all sides of the argument, including the view from the NHS, a criminal lawyer and former York student turned journalist and author Peter Hitchens, as well as lots of student opinions on the matter.

Mike Wallbank's Rockabilly Riot!

A show to turn even the lamest of squares into far-out foot tappers.

Over the course of the show, extreme levels of rockabilly will be pumped through the airwaves of URY, from Elvis Presley to The Big Bopper, all with the intention of providing maximum satisfaction.

The show will consist of anecdotes relating to the music in question, explorations into the popular themes and concepts of rockabilly/rock 'n' roll (such as a show dedicated to 'Death Discs'), as well as interviews with individuals who remember watching the rock 'n' roll stars of the 1950s in their heyday. Playing the big hits of the 1950s, as well as with the secret 7" golddust that's been hiding in the attic, this show will provide a roster of early rock 'n' roll and rockabilly that will make you want to turn your fringe into a quiff, your Volkswagen into a Cadillac, and your Carling into a Cherry Coke.

A Tribute To Radio Free Europe

This show will pay a tribute to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, the propaganda station that started during the Cold War and is still on air in some countries. Eevery week we'll learn of a short interesting story from RFE's golden days. For each show we'll have music from a different decade.

It will feature international guests, who will give a deeper insight on how it really is to live in different countries. More interesting topics will be discussed as well, which will be voted by the listeners. So don't hesitate, give it a listen :D

#Yorknext

ARE YOU BRAVE ENOUGH?

URY and Litsoc present a frightening live horror event happening right here on York Uni campus this Halloween.

So if you think you can last the hour in pitch black darkness we challenge you to come and be part of a special one-off URY event.

Good luck, we'll be waiting...

(More nights out, drinking and hopefully some sun shine towards the end). Possible interview from two friends hearing their favourite parts of term one and hearing about if they have learnt anything this term which they will not be doing next term.. spending all your loan in the first few weeks for instance.

Soul Sundays

Another thing associated with the North - apart from the rain - is Northern Soul music, a scene that keeps on burning. An hour of pure soul, Motown, maybe a bit of Ska if we're feeling adventorous. An introduction to the scene beyond the odd Stevie Wonder track you've heard in the car, so put your pen down on this hazy Sunday and just enjoy.  The revival is more alive than ever - Keep the Faith.

Surely nobody will ever need a show name to be this long?" Show, the Absolute Last No-More-After-This Complete and Utter Final Show of All Time (Perhaps?!?!) of Eiron Page (with Naomi Gildert, Who - We Hope - Has Many More Shows to Come)

We break the schedule layout to bring you one last show from former programme controller Eiron Page, and pass the baton by way of radio to the new programme controller - Naomi - and also play some music, ostensibly chosen by you. The PM show Eiron always meant to do, but never did; because leaving things to the last minute is how he do.

Simon's Show of Serendipity

Such a strange show with so many strange occurences. This is a show where really anything can happen within reason. It is ill planned, ill excecuted and the host is strange, but as the title suggests in the future it may become better and better by chance and what you guys say! So, enjoy the music, enjoy the talk and be weirded out by those people who keep looking at you through your window... Really what are they looking at..?

Sunday Shambles.

There is no agenda to this show. Being a lottery you could hear absolutely anything and it could be either very good or a complete SHAMBLES... come and take the eclectic risk with me to discover music like you may not (or may) have heard before.

The Age of Rock and Roll

an exploration of the wonderful music of the classic age of rock and roll, the 50's,60's,70's and 80's. Going through each decade year by year, show one looks at music from 1950,60,70 and 80, discovering information about the tracks and artists and including an 'on this day' segment as to what was occuring in the world on each day of broadcast in the year the tracks were created. From Jerry Lee Lewis to the late, great David Bowie," The Age of Rock and Roll" is perfect to get you up and dancing to the iconic sounds of the era of Rock and Roll.

Showtime! with Peter Rogers

URY Music Special: Record Store Day

Record Store Day was conceived in 2007 at a gathering of independent record store owners and employees as a way to celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding nearly 1400 independently owned record stores in the US and thousands of similar stores internationally. Desert Island Floppy Discs

As the saying goes, everyone gets theirs. University bigwigs, students, and campus in general have finally had enough of Jonny Long and Callum McCulloch.

In the ultimate act of media censorship, the powers that be have created an artificial island in the lake by central hall, and have duly marrooned our two entrepid protagonists upon it.

However, in an age of plummetting league table places, a disaffected student body, and general lack of extraordinarily funny people, the boys have been given a radio show to pass their time in exile, and also the option of recruiting one more person for their wiley band of vagabonds.

Therefore, they will be holding tryouts, live on air. There will be challenges, we will critique the songs you wish to bring with you, your luxury item better be on our list of things we need.

It's going to be sort of like The Apprentice, Only Connect, The X Factor, Raven, and a certain BBC Radio 4 radio show (that we can't remember the name of) all rolled into one.

The critics have called it a gamechanger, our mother's have called it a 2:2 waiting to happen.

All we know is that it's going to pop off in a big way.

It's dogs doing a student radio show.

Building Bridges - The Road to Rock and Roll

Who said rock needs to be moody and agressive? In this show I play radio friendly, fun rock music in an effort to encourage pop listeners to branch out. With occasional theme shows such as woman rock stars only, or a celebration of great Guitar Solos, this shows ams to deliver a fun way for the casual music consumer to discover a new genre!

URY:PM - Desert Island Floppy Discs

In the ultimate act of media censorship, the powers that be have created an artificial island in the lake by central hall, and have duly marrooned our two entrepid protagonists upon it.

However, in an age of plummetting league table places, a disaffected student body, and general lack of extraordinarily funny people, the boys have been given a radio show to pass their time in exile, and also the option of recruiting one more person for their wiley band of vagabonds.

After a resoundingly unsuccessful round of interviews last term, the search continues. Expect such radio classics as Stevie Wonder's 5-a-day, Identity Theft, the unforgettable Mum-DMC and plenty more.

And if for some reason you miss the show, you can watch video highlights which will be posted on our Facebook page.

Rumour has it this is the best show URY has ever seen, and we would know, we started those rumours.

URY:PM - Roku Radio
Tune in to Roku Radio, the home of bad links, dubious song choices and an award winning jingle! (Not that we're milking that) Self proclaimed as "perfectly adequate" and "definitely not the worst radio in existence" strap yourself in for two hours of mixed genre music, interesting guests, fun features and a lot of laughs. A Couple of Everyday Feminists

This show will predominantly focus on feminism/equal rights and deal with a different women's issue/equal rights issue every week. For example, one week we may discuss the crazy cat lady phenomenon and another might discuss the "feminism is extreme" assumption. We are hoping to incorporate issues that women face around the world also. All kinds of genres of music will be played, not necessarily relating to the topic for the week but just music that we want to share with listeners.

Still Buzzing

Deep in the data mines, URY engineering team work tirelessly, chained to their stations. A shadow falls over the lost souls, as a crooked finger points to a boy, merely a child. This child, our hero, is taken to a room of dials and cables and bars on the windows and forced to... Make a morning radio show designed to wake you up for a productive day!

The Great North Run

On the morning of The Great North Run, a family eagerly try and watch the race on TV, in the hope of seeing Daniel, the youngest member of the family.  Unfortunately they keep getting distracted.  Whether its arguing over jobs, or working through deeper issues the family has, you will become engrossed in the day to day lives of the household.  With a huge cast and a good mix of humour and drama, this is definitely a story to tune in to.

Written by Joe Dolan and Directing and Sound Engineering by Beth Wiffen.

Cast include Sienna Lucrezia as Mum, Beth Prior as Carol, Leo Clasen as Mike, Matthew Chesters as Dad, Dominic Gould as Daniel, Marco Ross as the Announcer and Weatherman, Claire Geller as the Reporter, Kieran Cockburn as the Historian, Euan Brook as the Interviewer, Isaac Saward as the Interviewee and Ella Rainbird-Earley as the Girlfriend.

Alumni Takeover: The Big Sofa

The Big Sofa graced the York Uni airwaves all the way back in 2001, when Rach was a psychology undergrad living in a breezeblock prison called Goodricke C Block.

Since then Rach has graduated (hurray! They said it would never happen!), moved away (now living in Mordor (Morden), London), worked three different jobs (evil corporate advertising; bonkers Virgin Radio; the BBC), birthed three kids (two boys, one girl), become a stand up comedian (three years in, still haven't done Live at the Apollo) and QUIT RADIO (sob.)

This last one makes her incredibly sad.

So Rach is ecstatic to be back behind a microphone. Join her for this one off two hour show and listen to the joy plastered all over her face.

Midweek Wakeup

It's the middle of the week, and your strength is begining to wane, but your timetable has not. You lie in bed, (within the boundaries of the University of York campus, the only place where URY can be heard), and you need a pick-me-up. Here I am, your best* legal resource for giving you the strength to face the morning.... by draining mine.

I have no experience, wit or charisma to speak of, but if you do at 8am then this show is not for you anyway.

The Waldorf and Statler: 50 Years

Waldorf and Statler do another 50 years, but this time it's 1968 - 2017. Plenty of good tunes (and some not), and probably no origami this time. They did try setting up their own origami business, but it folded.

URY:PM - Jed's Dead, Baby, Jed's Dead

Whose TV show is this?

It's a radio, baby.

Whose radio is this?

Jeds.

BOMBTRACKS

Ughh!
Hey yo, it's just another bombtrack...ughh!
Hey yo, it's just another bombtrack...yeah!
It goes a-1, 2, 3...

Hey yo, it's just another bombtrack
And suckas be thinkin' that they can fade this
But I'm gonna drop it at a higher level
'Cause I'm inclined to stoop down
Hand out some beat-downs
Cold runna train on punk ho's that
Think they run the game

But I learned to burn that bridge and delete
Those who compete...at a level that's obsolete
Instead I warm my hands upon the flames of the flag
As I recall our downfall
And the business that burned us all
See through the news and the views that twist reality

Enough
I call the bluff
Fudge Manifest destiny

Landlords and power Doors
On my people they took turns
Dispute the suits I ignite
And then watch 'em burn

With the thoughts from a militant mind
Hardline, hardline after hardline

Landlords and power boars
On my people they took turns
Dispute the suits I ignite
And then watch 'em burn

Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn
Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn
Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn
Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn

Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn
Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn
Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn
Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn

It goes a-1, 2, 3
Another funky radical bombtrack
Started as a sketch in my notebook
And now dope hooks make punks take another look
My thoughts ya hear and ya begin to fear
That ya card will get pulled if ya interfere

With the thoughts from a militant militant mind
Hardline, hardline after hardline

Landlords and power oars
On my people they took turns
Dispute the suits I ignite
And then watch 'em burn

Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn
Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn
Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn
Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn
Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn
Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn
Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn
Burn, burn, yes ya gonna burn
Burn

Ughh
Hey yo, it's just another bombtrack
Yeah
Ughh

Check it out

Midweek Wind Down

I had to move my show to the evening, so that I could attend a radio training day, to get better at radio; everybody agreed this was a good idea so here we are.

That Show Your Dad Likes

Does your dad love reading Amazon reviews? Forum posts about different Black and Decker drills? Well he might love this show! As we delve into the most banal corners of the internet to try and find some hidden meaning to everything. Failing this, we'll at least know the best way to make pancakes.  Weekly guests based on no logic at all, no format week to week beyond a theme we will decide in the moment. This will be the best worst thing you've ever listened to.

Grime Time

Do you like Grime? Well listen up! wether you're a seasoned veteren or completely new to the realms of 140bpm there will be something for you. From early Eski Beat, to the latest itterations of this underground movement, we're going to span the past 2 decades experiencing this fairly unexplored genre.

Days of the Week

This show is all about looking ahead to the next week of arguably unnecessary 'Days' of celebration that cloud internet calendars and Buzzfeed articles alike. Trying to find the appropriate tunes to accompany such holidays as, 'Be Bald and Free' Day, could prove a challenging task but there is something for every holiday season! Bathtub Day bangers anyone?

Jack vs George: Christmas Edition

Jack vs George is back! This time Christmas edition! With a different Jack but the same ole George. And of course, with Hannah as the quiz master... With everyone invitably hungover after the URY Christmas meal, it's going to be interesting to say the least.

URY Breakfast: It's Starting To Dawn On Me

It's starting to dawn on me... what a terrible idea doing a bumper 2 hour breakfast show is. If you do happen to be awake, you probably have something better to be doing anyway, but on the off chance you don't, why not listen to this?

Strange

The music played on this show is usually experimental in at least one dimension (but is not confined to this fairly uninformative tag), and as much as possible travels to you from a record or from a tape.

Forenoon Fire Up!

Does your morning leave you feeling frazzled? Does it feel more like a Fried-day?

Now back on twice a week for third term with the best of my recommendations and the worst of my on-air radio voice (because yes, I'm just as fried as you are).

Matt Windsor's Almost Definitely Last Ever Show, Probably

Exactly what it says on the tin.

Not that radio shows come in tins.

But this one does, and it's a three decade old salted pork tin full of what will probably be recent London migrant and soon-to-be-former PhD student Matt Windsor's last ever show on URY before he finally stops being a student.  Expect pretty much everything that can be expected from a washed up student radio DJ that was once referred to as URY's answer to Alan Partridge: an hour of awkward gaps between songs, awkward songs between gaps, and attempts to draw a close on 8ish years of somehow repeatedly being scheduled for shows despite having the radio nous of a loofah.  Does anyone still use loofahs?

((urdice)) but again even

more urdice but just this one time
