Description

Student loans may have just come in, but that doesn’t mean you have to break the bank for a meal out. You may already know Slug and Lettuce restaurants for their two for one desserts and bustling bar scenes, but this January sees the launch of their new ‘Saints and Sinners’ menu: a treat for both the wallet and your waistline.

Based on the premise of those wanting to start the year with a health kick, the ‘Saints and Sinners’ menu offers five dishes at £5 each; two of the meals coming in at under 500 calories. This is perfect for those who overindulged at Christmas, but still want a delicious meal out. From British classics like Fish and Chips, to the more exotic Smoky Spanish-Style Chicken, there’s something for everyone on this budget evening out.

I was immediately greeted with a smile, and ordered the Fish and Chips and a Sex On The Beach cocktail. My friend ordered a Classic Beef Burger and Cosmopolitan. Once the food came out, we were immediately surprised that the portions remained the same. Often, when meals are reduced in price, there is a distinct decrease in portion size, but this was not the case here. Even though the prices had dropped nearly 50% from 9.75 each, the portions were large enough to leave hungry students full.

The chips were a particular highlight, and the cocktails were a perfect accompaniment to the meal. Both the Cosmopolitan and the Sex On The Beach weren’t overbearingly alcoholic, and had wonderful fruity tones that interacted with the beef and fish. The fish was cooked and battered just as I like it – not too oily, meaning that although I had ordered a ‘Sinner’ meal, it didn’t feel overly fattening.

As we sat in the newly renovated Slug and Lettuce on Swinegate, we couldn’t help but notice the friendly, welcoming atmosphere. It wasn’t too loud, and the waiters were always attentive without being forceful. Such was our enjoyment that we furthered our dining experience by ordering dessert too! We both opted for the Cookie Cup Explosion – a trademark for the restaurant.

As our night drew to a close, we left the restaurant extremely pleased – and full! – with the standard of both the choice of food, and the service we had had. Our only criticism was that this ‘Saints and Sinners’ menu is only around until the end of January!

For those wanting to enjoy the menu for yourselves, the ‘Saints and Sinners’ deal is available Tuesday – Friday at every Slug and Lettuce restaurant until 29th January.

Menu includes:
Fish and Chips
Classic Beef Burger
Smothered Chicken
Smoky Spanish-Style Chicken (under 500kcals)
Stuffed Mexican Pasta (under 500kcals)
