This HowTo is a rundown of what you should do when you start your show. It is mainly a refresher for people who have already been trained.

Start Your Show

Getting into URY

  1. Come as early as possible, so you can make sure you can get in for your show.
  2. If URY is locked, you will need to get a keycard from Porters. In order to do this, you must be on their list of URY members, and will generally need to relinquish your Unicard as escrow.
    • Vanbrugh is the nearest portering service. From the URY station door facing outwards towards Grimston House, turn left, then left again, then right and follow the covered walkway down to the building on your left. Vanbrugh Porters is the reception on your left, opposite V-Bar and Vanbrugh Restaurant/JCR.
    • Derwent is a 24-hour portering service that sometimes has URY keycards, for out-of-hours shows, but it's a bit of a trek. Head towards Vanbrugh Porters then continue through the nucleus turning right and left. Head outside and continue on the covered walkway past Central Hall, then through the building it connects to; you will eventually come to an area with waste disposal and a bridge on the left and another building on the right. Derwent Porters is in that building, just head straight ahead bearing right and go through the front doors on your right.
    • Do NOT give URY keycards to non-members.

Which Studio?

Unless you have been specifically told, or have specifically chosen, to use Studio 2, you will be in Studio 1. This is the large red studio straight across from the station door.

Studio 2 is the smaller news studio on the left.

First Show of the Day

If yours is the first show of the day, you will need to turn the studio on, then proceed to "From Jukebox". This can also happen if your show comes after a long period of URY Jukebox.

Check The Clock/Selector

The first thing you will want to do in a switched-on studio is check the studio clock mounted on the wall of the studio:

  • If the clock says Jukebox is On Air in green text, proceed to "From Jukebox".
  • If the clock says Studio 1 is On Air in red text, proceed to "From Studio On Air" and follow instructions for Studio 1.
  • If the clock says Studio 2 is On Air in blue text, proceed to "From Studio On Air" and follow instructions for Studio 2.
  • If the clock isn't working, check the studio selector (the panel on top of the CD player console to your left with the coloured flick switches). The colour of the switch that is lit matches the colour of the text the studio clock would normally say (green/right for Jukebox, red/left for S1, blue/middle for S2).

From Jukebox

If there isn't a show on before yours, you will normally be starting your show from the URY Jukebox. This also happens if you're arriving late, or need some time to set up after the previous show finishes and before your show can start.

The procedure for starting from Jukebox is as follows:

  1. Fade the Jukebox fader up on your desk (on the Studio 2 desk it is labelled JUKE) to full (trim should be in the centre). You will now hear Jukebox in the studio. This is important in order to avoid switching from Jukebox to dead air.
  2. Ensure all the other faders are down.
  3. Go to the studio selector and hit the appropriate studio switch. The switch should now light up and the clock should change to Studio (number) is On Air.
    • In Studio 1 the selector is on top of the CD player console to your left, and the leftmost button is the Studio 1 switch.
    • In Studio 2 the selector is on the wall to your left, and the middlemost button is the Studio 2 switch.
    • If the switch was already lit up but the clock reads Jukebox is On Air, or switching lights up the switch but does not change the clock, inform Computing Team as soon as convenient and trust the studio selector.

From Studio On Air

Once you've escaped the confines of the Jukebox, things get more interesting.

The Other Studio Is On Air

Sometimes (rarely) you can be in the situation that you're in Studio 1 (2), and Studio 2 (1) is on air. Not to worry.

  1. Fade the other studio up on the desk to full. Trim should be in the centre.
  2. Use the studio selector to switch the correct studio.
  3. When ready, fade the other studio down.
  4. If the other studio is broadcasting silence, switch over to your studio immediately and either fade Jukebox up or start your show.
The Correct Studio Is On Air

At this point, you should either have Jukebox or News faded up in your studio, or be on air and playing something or talking. Do NOT broadcast silence. The studio systems WILL switch you over to Jukebox if they detect prolonged silence.

  • Take the opportunity to make sure your show is ready to go out (is it loaded on BAPS? Are you signed into SIS?)
  • Make sure your microphone is working (use the pre-fade/PFL button on the desk to test it)
  • If Jukebox is currently playing:
    1. When you're ready, fade Jukebox down and start your show.
  • If News is currently playing:
    1. You have until two minutes past the hour and then the news finishes (the cue words are "That's the latest, I'm PERSON."
    2. If you're not ready to proceed to your show, fade Jukebox up.
    3. Otherwise, get ready to jump in as soon as the news finishes.
  • If the previous show is playing, then politely inform them that they're overrunning. If they're still playing and it's between the hour and two minutes past, additionally chide them for not playing news.
