It/they are referred to as a 'wife' as several successive Station Managers were not technically minded and could not be trusted with even simple engineering tasks on OBs, and therefore it became something of a society in-joke that on an OB the only task of the Station Manager was to ensure their 'wife' did not fall over/break...it's a pretty sexist joke...</div>10418
