Another AGM, another committee called to continue on a year of radio fun, hilarity, and probable chaos. With URY on DAB (thanks OFCOM!) and changes to the schedule incoming, it was shaping up to be an interesting year. The MediaWiki was once more updated by the dynamic Double Act (yes, they made the pun into a show name!) of Charlotte Baskeyfield (the Archives and Alumni Officer) and Charlotte Smith, who'd since been elected Programme Controller.

With Harvey Mellor at the helm, the URY committee of 2023/24 plans to lead the Radio into a year of radio-ing fun. With the world back to pre-pandemic living, station meetings were filled with seriousness (and hilarity). Needless to say, URY has a bright future ahead of it.

This was also the year that the MediaWiki finally got some love, with major updates made by the Archives and Alumni officer, Charlotte.

== 2020/21 ==

This year, the large wave of freshers formed committee, and only 2 weeks into their reign, were shoved into new territory as the pandemic happened. They went through a whole year of not seeing each other, and never actually going into the station. They discovered a '''love''' of Zoom and Google Meets, put Alex in the waiting room, and wondered if Connor would ever turn his camera on.

=== The General Premise ===

On 28th October 2023, URY held their annual Freshers OB, where new members of the society could learn how to set up, present, and pack down when broadcasting outside of the station. With broadcasting running at James Beach from 13.00 to 16.01, the result was three non-stop hours of chaotic songs, presenting, and very smooth transitions.

This page shall document the most significant jokes, chaotic incidents, and general happenings.

==== The Setup (dun dun dun) ====

As it happens, not much of note actually happened during setup. Since it was *not* [[National No Gazebo Day]], the gazebo did not break, and everything was fine - aside from one thing. According to eyewitness accounts, the speakers fell down. By 13.00, however, they were fully set up and ready for broadcasting. They also did not break into any rooms in James College. Seriously, they didn't.

==== The Start ====

In the first 30 minutes of the broadcast, several members of URY conducted a reach test: the OB could be heard from as far away as the Campus Nisa and just outside V-Bar. However, in terms of legibility for speaking, the limit was practically the area around the lake on West.

==== The Broadcast ====

Several random happenings occurred during the broadcast, some of which are documented below:

* There were approx. 10 presenters and a few members of the tech team floating around during the day, which certainly created a friendly atmosphere.

* URY received several odd messages through, initially stating something to do with the music and getting into car crashes. This mysterious listener continued to send messages in throughout the day, calling it "exciting". To this day, URY is not actually sure what they meant by this, or if it was a troll. Most messages were very supportive.

* They had many requests from members of the public, including Level 42, Basket Case by Green Day and Satisfaction by Benny Benassi. The amount of internal requests is so long that it made up practically the entire show!

* Whilst playing the intro to Pigstep, the group probably nearly managed to break everyone's eardrums by playing it just a little too loud. This issue was fixed one second later.

* According to the tech lead for the day, output for nearly an entire two hours were distorted online and on stereo FM. This was fixed somewhere in the second half of the broadcast period.

* There was an "oldie takeover" of non-Freshers presenting a single link during the last hour of the show. They probably played something from the Beatles, or adjacent.

* It was incredibly cold, to the point that several presenters had to run home and grab more layers.

* Between those present, at least 4 separate Nisa runs were made for mostly hot drinks and snacks. One of the presenters at the time, like a madlad, grabbed an iced coffee instead of a hot one.

* There was a singular meow on air. More was requested. More did not come.

* At one point, the presenter live asked for several bicycle riders on the bridge opposite to the OB to do a wheelie. Three successful wheelies were witnessed. Later, URY also broadcast an informal vox-pop with more bicycle riders.

* The OB potentially broke the record for earliest Christmas song and jingle on air in URY: "Here Comes Santa Claus (Right Down Santa Claus Lane)" by Elvis Presley was played at 14:27, followed by a URY Xmas jingle. It was not even Halloween.

* The same URY member that had bought iced coffee also started shouting "THREE MORE HOURS!" towards the end of the OB. This did not and was not intended to be on air, but was a direct reference to the "FOUR MORE YEARS" inside joke regarding URY'S SRA nominations.

* Many of the presenters plugged their shows early on, including Music Menagerie which started straight after the OB ended.

* The transitions overall were very smooth, sometimes involving a fair amount of setup.

* Only one K-POP song made it onto the broadcast: "POP/STARS" by K/DA.

* Two Lena Raine songs made it onto the broadcast: "Confronting Myself" and "Pigstep".

* Two Beatles songs made it onto the broadcast: "Yesterday" and "Girl".

* The first song played was the Muppet Show theme, and the final song played was "With or Without You" by U2.

* Several presenters logged into Timelord to help with specific timings. Not everyone knew this was a thing you could do, but it is.

* According to one metric, the total "stream time" (different to time live on air) was 3 hours and 40 minutes. This was possibly due to the setup being completed extremely quickly.

*The URY "Whisper" jingle made it into at least one song as a joke, and airhorns were played during another.

*URY received several requests from the Pole Exercise society, as they were practically in a room behind the OB setup.

==== The Transition ====

Whilst on air, the team of miscellaneous members of URY present at the OB decided to complete a series of events this page will label as "The Transition". At 14:59, the song "Crab Rave" by Noisestorm was played, before being cut off at the beat drop for what seemed like the news to be played; this is not required on OBs.

However, after the introduction to the news was played, the broadcast went straight into Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up", and proceeded to rickroll a section of Campus West before linking to "Buddy Holly" by Weezer following the jingle that normally plays for exiting news.

This plan had been concocted 30 minutes beforehand, and went successfully. The presenting team found this entire sequence hilarious.

The end of the broadcast went without issue: by 16.01, Studio Red started broadcasting and the OB had officially ended. Packdown went smoothly afterwards, and URY broadcasting went straight to Music Menagerie.

A tradition for certain, University of York and York St John's' Christian Unions put on a Carol service at York Minster every year. However, cool events like this should get broadcasted. Therefore, this is where URY stepped in, to provide an OB of Carols, on the 30th November 2023.

This event was the largest of the first semester 23/24, with just shy of 30 people in attendance over a single day. This may have broken the URY attendance records for events, with the possible exception of Roses coverage, and has been motivated by a large amount of Freshers joining URY during the 23/24 academic year.

* "Anxietree" was the nickname for one particular mic stand because at least one member of URY feared it would topple over. It didn't. Said mic stand had over £4000 worth of microphones on it, so it's easy to see why.

* Multiple shows were cancelled to make room for the OB. == What do we do? ==

We like to think of ourselves as the ''everything'' team, because while we're limited to poking anything that involves computers, we actually do an incredible amount of stuff:

We look after the URY website and make sure that other teams are able to keep it full of content.

The main public website is written in Go, and our website runs on the '''Nginx''' web server.

=== Servers ===

We run our own physical servers, which involves a lot of nipping into our server shed to turn things off and on, swap cables around and shout at power supplies. If you like pulling things out of racks, staring at them, sticking RAM in them and putting them back in racks, then we offer one of the finest physical server admin experiences available to York students.

Of course, it isn't all about the hardware. We also do a lot of system administration on the software side, making sure that all the processes that keep URY running stay up and don't tie themselves in knots. We run '''FreeBSD''' and '''Debian GNU/Linux''', with a '''Windows Server''' domain controller for the desktop systems.

Each studio has a few computers, typically running '''Windows''', that are used by presenters for playing out sound, connecting to the Internet, and using our Studio Information Service. These have to be maintained, of course, and it's us that rise to the challenge.

Compteam develop and maintain most of our software in-house, a fact that we are very proud of - know of any other society at the university that can say that? Know of any other student radio station that can say that? We don't. We've listed some of our things below, and linked to our ''Ceedox'' wiki which keeps all our technical documentation and secrets. ==== LoggerNG ====

LoggerNG is our output logging system. Our Ofcom licence means we have to have a log of 42 days of output at all times - if we aren't recording, we aren't broadcasting. The old logger system runned on some vintage desktop hardware from around 2001, so we needed something new.

LoggerNG includes two dedicated servers, a ''sox''-based recording program, 65 days of FLAC files and a HTML5 download interface on a third server. It's a big thing, and needs to work 100% of the time, all the time (well, term time).

==== Broadcasting and Presenting Suite (BAPS) ====
This is another one of our older systems. Written around 2003 in Managed C++, at the time it was seen as everything a presenter would need to do a show - on a computer. Of course, the original designers did not plan for a decade in the future, where social media, HTML5 and APIs are the way of the future, so it is now starting to seem somewhat dated.

The server side of the system manages the ability to play out different audio to different sound cards. It lacks lots of functionality, but is in fact very very good at what it does.

It is a computing team joke about people starting BAPS3. Various people have tried this, and the current try is a server called BAPSicle using the WebStudio interface. Let's see if it works.

==== If No Show, I Do an Instantly Organised, Unending Show - Totally Outrageous Non-stop Entertainment System (insidious Tones (iTones)) ====

Publically known as URY's Campus Jukebox, this is the system that plays songs when there's not a presenter on air. It's another of our mission critical things as we can't broadcast silence, but it also has lots of neat tricks in the form of a web interface to define a range of pre-defined playlist schedules and some automated playlist generation. Its scheduler is part of the MyRadio framework and integrates with the telnet interface of a little-known thing called Liquidsoap (a Savonet project). Trust us when we say it is very powerful and a lot of fun to play with. There's also a lot of shouting and arguing with it too. Its a range of emotions.

This magical little thing is designed to be the glue for URY's services. Written in PHP, Twig and HTML5, this is essentially our intranet. Here's some of the things it pulls together:

2020 happened. Pandemic happened. WebStudio got made, to allow people to present from home. Written in TypeScript, React and Redux, with the server side in Python.

==== Show Planner (this is pretty much dead now, this is here for the history) ====

Built upon the MyRadio framework, Show Planner is a HTML5 version of the in-studio BAPS client, but in a web browser. It allows anyone to plan shows, upload files and do lots of other neat stuff. If you like lots of pretty client side stuff, with a multi-user editable backend, then you'll love this.

During initial development, it went through several names - BAPSWeb 2, BAPS Planner and NIPSWeb, before eventually being named the more simple Show Planner. It replaced BAPSWeb, a single several-thousand line PHP file and a Comic-Sans interface which were developed around the same time as BAPS itself.

Version 1 was featured as part of our Less Black and More Graphics entry in the Student Radio Awards 2012, but was replaced by the MyRadio integrated version over the next year.

Version 2 of this little gizmo won us a Silver Best Technical Achievement at the Student Radio Awards 2013.

Version 3 is current near-completion, the client-side complete rewritten as part of MyRadio's move to Bootstrap.

Though Compteam have the burden of a lot of responsibility for critical systems most of the time, really most of us are here to '''have fun'''.

Being in and around a student radio station gives people who want to play around with new ideas in an existing context a real jumpstart, and as a consequence whenever we're not fixing stuff we're often in URY working on making new things. Here are a few examples:

URY membership is £7 if you make a regular habit of poking our systems, but anyone is free to come and have a go. The team often has meetings at on Wednesdays in VBar around 7pm.

We strive to make sure the station’s amazing content gets the amount of reach our great team of presenters and behind the scene magicians deserve! === What is the Music team? ===

The Music Team at URY has its hands in a lot of pies. The bulk of URY's programming is dedicated to specialist music shows, and these are the people that often make them happen. With various projects running throughout the year (including Local Lowdown, the flagship programme for local talent!), URY Music makes sure that the station is filled with amazing music at all times.

We also have a large vinyl collection, numbering 13,000~ at last count, and many CDs with which enthusiasts will surely have a blast.

Joe likes to get his music team press access to festivals such as Parklife, Boomtown and Leeds Festival. In these festivals, the content produced is far superior than anything LSR could ever dream of.

In short, if you like music - and want to chat about it with other music enthusiasts - then this is the team for you! What 'precisely' the team does is down to them; so come along to meetings and find out!

Of course, music is an extremely important part of the station, so they have no singular event each week. However, music meetings occur every Wednesday at 5pm in Courtyard, so come and say hi!

On 28th October 2023, URY held their annual Freshers OB, where new members of the society could learn how to set up, present, and pack down when broadcasting outside of the station. With broadcasting running at James Beach from 13.00 to 16.01, the result was three non-stop hours of chaotic songs, presenting, and very smooth transitions.

This page shall document the most significant jokes, chaotic incidents, and general happenings.

=== The Actual Broadcast ===

==== The Setup (dun dun dun) ====

As it happens, not much of note actually happened during setup. Since it was *not* [[National No Gazebo Day]], the gazebo did not break, and everything was fine - aside from one thing. According to eyewitness accounts, the speakers fell down. By 13.00, however, they were fully set up and ready for broadcasting. They also did not break into any rooms in James College. Seriously, they didn't.

At exactly In the first 30 minutes of the broadcast, several members of URY conducted a reach test: the OB could be heard from as far away as the Campus Nisa and just outside V-Bar. However, in terms of legibility for speaking, the limit was practically the area around the lake on West.

==== The Broadcast ====

Several random happenings occurred during the broadcast, some of which are documented below:

* There were approx. 10 presenters and a few members of the tech team floating around during the day, which certainly created a friendly atmosphere.

* URY received several odd messages through, initially stating something to do with the music and getting into car crashes. This mysterious listener continued to send messages in throughout the day, calling it "exciting". To this day, URY is not actually sure what they meant by this, or if it was a troll. Most messages were very supportive.

* They had many requests from members of the public, including Level 42, Basket Case by Green Day and Satisfaction by Benny Benassi. The amount of internal requests is so long that it made up practically the entire show!

* Whilst playing the intro to Pigstep, the group probably nearly managed to break everyone's eardrums by playing it just a little too loud. This issue was fixed one second later.

* According to the tech lead for the day, output for nearly an entire two hours were distorted online and on stereo FM. This was fixed somewhere in the second half of the broadcast period.

* There was an "oldie takeover" of non-Freshers presenting a single link during the last hour of the show. They probably played something from the Beatles, or adjacent.

* It was incredibly cold, to the point that several presenters had to run home and grab more layers.

* Between those present, at least 4 separate Nisa runs were made for mostly hot drinks and snacks. One of the presenters at the time, like a madlad, grabbed an iced coffee instead of a hot one.

* There was a singular meow on air. More was requested. More did not come.

* At one point, the presenter live asked for several bicycle riders on the bridge opposite to the OB to do a wheelie. Three successful wheelies were witnessed. Later, URY also broadcast an informal vox-pop with more bicycle riders.

* The OB potentially broke the record for earliest Christmas song and jingle on air in URY: "Here Comes Santa Claus (Right Down Santa Claus Lane)" by Elvis Presley was played at 14:27, followed by a URY Xmas jingle. It was not even Halloween.

* The same URY member that had bought iced coffee also started shouting "THREE MORE HOURS!" towards the end of the OB. This did not and was not intended to be on air, but was a direct reference to the "FOUR MORE YEARS" inside joke regarding URY'S SRA nominations.

* Many of the presenters plugged their shows early on, including Music Menagerie which started straight after the OB ended.

* The transitions overall were very smooth, sometimes involving a fair amount of setup.

* Only one K-POP song made it onto the broadcast: "POP/STARS" by K/DA.

* Two Lena Raine songs made it onto the broadcast: "Confronting Myself" and "Pigstep".

* Two Beatles songs made it onto the broadcast: "Yesterday" and "Girl".

* The first song played was the Muppet Show theme, and the final song played was "With or Without You" by U2.

* Several presenters logged into Timelord to help with specific timings. Not everyone knew this was a thing you could do, but it is.

* According to one metric, the total "stream time" (different to time live on air) was 3 hours and 40 minutes. This was possibly due to the setup being completed extremely quickly.

However, after the introduction to the news was played, the broadcast went straight into Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up", and proceeded to rickroll a section of Campus West before linking to "Buddy Holly" by Weezer following the jingle that normally plays for exiting news.

This plan had been concocted 30 minutes beforehand, and went successfully. The presenting team found this entire sequence hilarious.

However, after the introduction to the news was played, the broadcast went straight into Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up", and proceeded to rickroll a section of Campus West before linking to "Buddy Holly" by Weezer following the jingle that normally plays for exiting news.

This plan had been concocted 30 minutes beforehand, and went successfully. The presenting team found this entire sequence hilarious.

== Freshers OB (Outside Broadcast) 2023 ==

=== The General Premise ===

On 28th October 2023, URY held their annual Freshers OB, where new members of the society could learn how to set up, present, and pack down when broadcasting outside of the station. With broadcasting running at James Beach from 13.00 to 16.01, the result was three non-stop hours of chaotic songs, presenting, and very smooth transitions.

This page shall document the most significant jokes, chaotic incidents, and general happenings.

==== The Setup (dun dun dun) ====

As it happens, not much of note actually happened during setup. Since it was *not* [[National No Gazebo Day]], the gazebo did not break, and everything was fine - aside from one thing. According to eyewitness accounts, the speakers fell down. By 13.00, however, they were fully set up and ready for broadcasting. They also did not break into any rooms in James College. Seriously, they didn't.

==== The Start ====

At exactly In the first 30 minutes of the broadcast, several members of URY conducted a reach test: the OB could be heard from as far away as the Campus Nisa and just outside V-Bar. However, in terms of legibility for speaking, the limit was practically the area around the lake on West.

==== The Broadcast ====

Several random happenings occurred during the broadcast, some of which are documented below:

* There were approx. 10 presenters and a few members of the tech team floating around during the day, which certainly created a friendly atmosphere.

* URY received several odd messages through, initially stating something to do with the music and getting into car crashes. This mysterious listener continued to send messages in throughout the day, calling it "exciting". To this day, URY is not actually sure what they meant by this, or if it was a troll. Most messages were very supportive.

* They had many requests from members of the public, including Level 42, Basket Case by Green Day and Satisfaction by Benny Benassi. The amount of internal requests is so long that it made up practically the entire show!

* Whilst playing the intro to Pigstep, the group probably nearly managed to break everyone's eardrums by playing it just a little too loud. This issue was fixed one second later.

* According to the tech lead for the day, output for nearly an entire two hours were distorted online and on stereo FM. This was fixed somewhere in the second half of the broadcast period.

* There was an "oldie takeover" of non-Freshers presenting a single link during the last hour of the show. They probably played something from the Beatles, or adjacent.

* It was incredibly cold, to the point that several presenters had to run home and grab more layers.

* Between those present, at least 4 separate Nisa runs were made for mostly hot drinks and snacks. One of the presenters at the time, like a madlad, grabbed an iced coffee instead of a hot one.

* There was a singular meow on air. More was requested. More did not come.

* At one point, the presenter live asked for several bicycle riders on the bridge opposite to the OB to do a wheelie. Three successful wheelies were witnessed. Later, URY also broadcast an informal vox-pop with more bicycle riders.

* We potentially broke the record for earliest Christmas song and jingle on air in URY: "Here Comes Santa Claus (Right Down Santa Claus Lane)" by Elvis Presley was played at 14:27, followed by a URY Xmas jingle. It was not even Halloween.

* The same URY member that had bought iced coffee also started shouting "THREE MORE HOURS!" towards the end of the OB. This did not and was not intended to be on air, but was a direct reference to the "FOUR MORE YEARS" inside joke regarding URY'S SRA nominations.

* Many of the presenters plugged their shows early on, including Music Menagerie which started straight after the OB ended.

* The transitions overall were very smooth, sometimes involving a fair amount of setup.

* Only one K-POP song made it onto the broadcast: "POP/STARS" by K/DA.

* Two Lena Raine songs made it onto the broadcast: "Confronting Myself" and "Pigstep".

* Two Beatles songs made it onto the broadcast: "Yesterday" and "Girl".

The Sports team are often active throughout the week, with many shows under their remit! The Music Team at URY has its hands in a lot of pies. The bulk of URY's programming is dedicated to specialist music shows, and these are the people that often make them happen. With various projects running throughout the year (including Local Lowdown, the flagship programme for local talent!), URY Music makes sure that the station is filled with amazing music at all times.

We also have a large vinyl collection, numbering 13,000~ at last count, and many CDs with which enthusiasts will surely have a blast.

In short, if you like music - and want to chat about it with other music enthusiasts - then this is the team for you! What 'precisely' the team does is down to them; so come along to meetings and find out!

With Harvey Mellor at the helm, the URY committee of 2023/24 plans to lead the Radio into a year of radio-ing fun. With the world back to pre-pandemic living, station meetings were filled with seriousness (and hilarity). Needless to say, URY has a bright future ahead of it.

This was also the year that the MediaWiki finally got some love, with major updates made by the Archives and Alumni officer, Charlotte.

This year, the large wave of freshers formed committee, and only 2 weeks into their reign, were shoved into new territory as the pandemic happened. They went through a whole year of not seeing each other, and never actually going into the station.
